Celebrating Marcus Garvey and the Garvey Movement

The Creator-gifted natural genius that Afrikan people carry
is powerfully important in Afrikan life expression. The supreme visionary
Marcus Garvey is a polymath who’s everlasting legacy of skill and magnificence dedicated to
the betterment of Afrikan souls throughout the world spanned a multitude of spheres.
The organised spiritual thrust of Marcus Garvey is a core example. Garvey’s
legacy highlights his exceptional capabilities as a spiritual practitioner in
service of the Afrikan.
Reverend Porter articulated the following in 1930:
“I do not know whether or not Marcus Garvey is aware of the fact that he has given the world a new religion, nevertheless he has. To me Garveyism is a religion which is sane, practical, inspiring and satisfying; it is of God, hence a devout Garveyite cannot deny the existence of God, but sees God in you, I and the world”.
Even foreign observers in more recent times concur and highlight the influential pioneering impact made by Garveyism that time has revealed:
“Garveyism became an extension of traditional ideology, as important to survival in secular life as salvation and redemption were for the afterlife. Other modern organisations had not yet adopted Black uplift as a sacred obligation. This unique and essential component of Garveyism made racial pride, self-defence and Afrikan redemption sanctified causes. The hallowed attachment helped carry these principles through subsequent generations”.
Marcus Garvey powerfully articulated the following in concise yet deeply meaningful and mission-compelling words:
“Your Duty Today - Believe in [the Creator], Lift Yourself, Lift Your Family, Lift Your Clan, Lift Your Race, Lift Your Country, Lift Your Nation and Be an Imperial Whole”.
Even a cursory examination of Garvey’s words ought to evoke some sense of familiarity in the now, for the foundation principle of the Nguzo Saba (Seven Princples) at the core of the Kwanzaa observance and all-year-round fabric of living is:
“Umoja (Unity) - To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race”.
The Bendara Ya Taifa (Flag of the Nation) coloured red, black and green was established by Marcus Garvey, and despite alien efforts of ill to hijack, co-opt or misrepresent its meaning – it is just that – the global flag of Afrikan nationhood. It is this red, black and green colouration that the candles of the Mishumaa Saba (Seven Candles) that emerge from the Kwanzaa observance hold. The red, black and green flag is a flag of Afrikan excellence, uprightness, powerfulness, discipline and order amongst many other superlative qualities – it is a powerful symbol of Garveyism.
Afrikan Spirituality By Way of Kwanzaa (ASBWOK) continues the powerful living thrust of Garveyism in harmonious and complementary oneness with the cultural fabric of living expressed by the wonderful observance of Kwanzaa (itself a custodian of Garvey inspirations).
Taking the core principles of Garveyism: Race First, Self-Reliance and Nationhood (RFSR &N), the living tenets of ASBWOK can be articulated (and may be applied in the best ways possible according to particular circumstance or conditions) thus:
The Afrikan person-self working in victorious thrust of RFSR & N
The harmonious and complimentary union of the Afrikan man and the Afrikan woman working in victorious thrust of RFSR & N
The Afrikan family working in victorious thrust of RFSR & N
The Afrikan community working in victorious thrust of RFSR & N
The Afrikan nation working in victorious thrust of RFSR & N
The Afrikan world community working in victorious thrust of RFSR & N
