Celebrating Marcus Garvey and the Garvey Movement

The supreme visionary Marcus Garvey is a spirit of forthright
victorious result personified. He boldly challenged Afrikan souls to challenge
themselves to build in nationhood. At the same time providing the highly organised
structure and mission to do so from whatever geographical locale in the world.
This is an exceptional Afrikan man of conviction intent to see the nation rise
of his people. Here, this great hero articulates the challenge:
“Where can we find in this race of ours real men. Men of character, men of purpose, men of confidence, men of faith, men who really know themselves? So few of us can understand what it takes to make a man—the man who will never say die; the man who will never give up; the man who will never depend upon others to do for him what he ought to do for himself; the man who will not blame God, who will not blame Nature, who will not blame Fate for his condition; but the man who will go out and make conditions to suit himself. Oh, how disgusting life becomes when on every hand you hear people (who bear your image, who bear your resemblance) telling you that they cannot make it, that Fate is against them, that they cannot get a chance. If…[Afrikans] can only get to know themselves, to know that in them is a sovereign power, is an authority that is absolute, then in the next twenty-four hours we would have a new race, we would have a nation…resurrected, not from the will of others to see us rise – but from our own determination to rise irrespective of what the world thinks”.
It has been an exceedingly long ‘twenty-four hours’ since Garvey raised this call. However, the thrust of his words and deeds reverberate across the generations to be received by and to provide energy to, the ever-growing multitudes of progressive Afrikan souls throughout the world in thrust of nation.
Despite, the futile attempts of the forces of anti-Afrikan agency to destroy the rise of Afrikan nationhood laced with the bogus mis-representation and attempted co-opting of even the symbols and language of Afrikan nation uplift, Garvey’s words provide corrective recourse:
“Show me a race or nation without a flag, and I will show you a race of people without any pride”.
Do Afrikan souls have a vision of nation pride for themselves with their Bendara Ya Taifa (Flag of the Nation) raised aloft. Or, is Afrikan resource and energy being haemorrhaged in service of others that mean the Afrikan ill? Garvey powerfully articulates caution in this way:
“No respectable woman or man who cares about his or her future is going to be indiscriminate because that is taking chances. Therefore, when you find a person of immoral habits, it is someone who has lost all proportion of decency and health and doesn’t care. Such a person is a social danger. Sensible people do not five themselves away for nothing, but sick people and diseased people, like a drowning man, catch at a straw”.
Afrikan souls must surely purge themselves of alien-ill contaminates and rise in self-determined thrust of nationhood. The more wholesome Afrikan souls restore themselves to be, the more readily identifiable alien ills become and can be exfiltrated for righteous order to prevail.
