Celebrating Marcus Garvey and the Garvey Movement

The supreme visionary, Marcus Garvey knew the inherent power Afrikan souls have when progressively working in structured order of ascension. For Garvey, Afrikan organisation is a natural imperative and he articulated this in a number of different ways. Using the structure and selected elements of the organisational framework from the Master Plan of Chancellor Williams, the derivation can be detailed thus:

Spiritual-Cultural Order

Order of Self-Governance

Order of Economic Planning and Development

Order of Education

Order of Intelligence and Security

Order of Media and Communications

The great hero, Marcus Garvey powerfully and insightfully articulated the following in relation to the element of the Order of Education:

“You must never stop learning. The world’s greatest men and women were people who educated themselves outside of the university with all the knowledge that the university gives, and you have the opportunity of doing the same thing the university student does – read and study”.

“Anything that you are going to challenge, you must first know about it”.

“Books are one’s best companions. Try to get them and keep them. A method of doing so is: Everytime you have ten cents or twenty-five cents or a dollar to spend foolishly, either on your friends or yourself, think how much more useful if that ten or twenty-five cents or dollar would be invested in a book and so invest it. It may be just the thing you have been looking for to give you a thought by which you may win the heart of the world. The ten cents, twenty-five cents or a dollar, therefore, may turn out to be an investment of worth to the extent of millions of dollars”.

“Never swallow wholly what the [alien] man [or woman] writes or says without first critically analysing it and investigating it. The [alien] man’s trick is to deceive other people for his own benefit and profit.

Always be on your guard against him in whatsoever he does or says. Never take chances with him. His school books in the elementary and high schools, colleges and universities are all fixed up to suit his own purposes; to put him on top and to keep him on top of other people. Don’t trust him. Beware! Beware!”

“To be learned in all that is worth while knowing. Not to be crammed with the subject matter of the book or philosophy of the class room, but to store away in your head such facts as you need for the daily application of life, so that you may the better in all things understand your fellowmen, and interpret your relationship to your Creator.

You can be educated in soul, vision and feeling, as well as in mind. To see your enemy and know him is a part of the complete education of man; to spiritually regulate one’s self is another form of the higher education that fits man for a nobler place in life, and still, to approach your brother by the feeling of your own humanity, is an education that softens the ills of the world and makes us kind indeed.

Many a man was educated outside the school room. It is something you let out, not completely take in. You are part of it, for it is natural; it is dormant simply because you will not develop it, but [the Creator] creates every man with it knowingly or unknowingly to him who possesses it – that’s the difference. Develop yours and you become as great and full of knowledge as the other fellow”.
