Celebrating Marcus Garvey and the Garvey Movement

The supreme visionary, Marcus
Garvey knew the inherent power Afrikan souls have when progressively working in
structured order of ascension. For Garvey, Afrikan organisation is a natural
imperative and he articulated this in a number of different ways. Using the
structure and selected elements of the organisational framework from the Master
Plan of Chancellor Williams, the
derivation can be detailed thus:
Spiritual-Cultural Order
Order of Self-Governance
Order of Economic Planning and Development
Order of Education
Order of Intelligence and Security
Order of Media and Communications
The great hero, Marcus Garvey powerfully and insightfully articulated the following in relation to the element of the Order of Intelligence and Security:
“Never overstep your authority in dealing with a division as a representative”.
“Never try to be offensive. Never threaten others, but reason with them. To threaten an officer or a member is to invite antagonism and belligerence, which will make your task more difficult. Never enter into any unworthy arrangement with officers or members of divisions, because ultimately they will expose you when you do not do things to suit them. The moment you enter into any dishonourable arrangement, the person you have done so with, holds it as a club over your head and will place you in a false position. In order not to expose yourself, don’t do it”.
“Let every day, every hour and every minute count in your life for something done, something accomplished. Don’t waste time, it is a sin. Time wasted can never be recalled or regained. Try to always be the best advocate of the cause…always try to find the right way”.
“Great care must be taken in watching and controlling the activities of the Legions, because in ignorance they are apt to get the division or organisation in trouble by trying to exercise authority while they are only members…The Legions’ function is more physical, cultural and disciplinary than anything else. Any hostile demonstration by them that endangers the community or the peace thereof or creates trouble among the members, must be quickly put down and if necessary, their unit suspended to prevent such trouble”.
“Whenever you think something is detrimental to the organisation and its policies, never fail to correct it immediately, so that the people may not get the wrong impression. Always defend the organisation and protect its name in the public press or otherwise”.
“Men and women who want to be of use to themselves and humanity must have good character. Good character means the demonstration of the kind of behaviour that meets the moral precepts of a civilisation; the standard that is laid down by the society of the time in which you live and which forms a part of and guides that very character…The greatest prop to character is honesty. Honesty is the best policy. Let no one believe that you are dishonest. If they believe you are dishonest, you are doomed”.
”Faithfulness is actuated by a state of heart and mind in the individual that changes not. No one is wholely faithful to a cause or an object, except his heart and mind remain firm without change or doubt. If one’s attitude or conduct changes toward an object, then one has lost one’s faithfulness. It is a wholeness of belief overshadowing all suspicion, all doubt, admitting of no question; to serve without regret or disgust, to obligate one’s self to that which is promised or expected, to keep to our word and do our duty well”.
