Celebrating Marcus Garvey and the Garvey Movement

The pioneering UK-based Afrikan film maker Menelik Shabazz made his transition into the ancestral realm just a few days ago on the 28th of this month. Deepest and heartfelt condolences go out to his loved ones, family and friends in what must be a difficult and challenging time as they come to terms with the physical departure of this family man and dynamic creative force.  Amongst his classic works are the documentary productions, Blood Ah Go Run and a showcase of his directorial prowess in, Time and Judgement: Diary of a 400 year Exile.

Time and Judgement has been an informative staple and standard-bearing classic UK documentary filmmaking for decades. With eye-opening glimpses of Afrikan life in the UK and around the Afrikan world, this film puts motion to experiences that are largely left out of the mainstream media continuum and largely void in mainstream academic curricular for ready Afrikan access.

There are several aspects of Garveyism that are explicitly brought to fore within the film’s imagery and through statements made within the film. There are also persons and organs that are influenced or inspired by Marcus Garvey that are represented in this classic media production that holds many lessons.

Many years ago Menelik graciously showcased a showing of this film with a question and answer session at the request of this author where he discussed aspects of his powerful journey as a filmmaker. Afrikan souls in attendance were able to have meaningful conversation with him, obtain copies of his various productions on dvd, exchange details and so on.

The mainstream media arena is riddled with challenges. Still, this film has been revisited a number of times in formal discussion settings over the years within this arena and despite the ‘undercover’ disruptive efforts of others by proxy, the exposure to informative content had been of great help to those genuinely on the path of Afrikan betterment. Especially those who had joined in on the genuine path of elevation for the first time.

May Menelik rest in power and may his inspirational efforts in media inspire great independent works in this and future generations of Afrikan souls whether souls are becoming aware for the first time or otherwise.
