Kwanzaa – Proverbs of Unity

Celebration of First Fruits

The wonderful wisdom filled utterances that emerge from throughout the Afrikan world are a result of the marvellous qualities of genius that have been gifted by the Creator Supreme. From the development of the first, most magnificent and longest-lived civilisations of the world delivered in all their splendour by the Afrikan, came profound and long-lasting utterances wisdom. Throughout the world Afrikans still retain the utterances of their wisdom tradition through proverbs. Whether on the great Afrikan continent itself or throughout the diaspora, the substance of age-old Afrikan wisdom is illuminated through proverbs. In celebrating the wonderful observance of Kwanzaa the glory of Afrikan wisdom is part of the festivities. Here follows a select sample of seven traditional Afrikan proverbs adapted by this author in relation to the foundation principle of the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles) - Umoja (Unity). These proverbs are expressed from the beautiful language of Kiswahili with their loose approximate meaning detailed in the alien pseudo-language of English: 


Umoja (Unity)


Mungu ndiye Mungu wa ukweli.

The Creator Supreme is Creator Supreme of truth.


Njia ya utaifa wa Kiafrika ni wapi unapata rafiki.

The way of the Afrikan nationhood is where you find a friend. 


Jitoshe pamoja katika tamaduni yako mwenyewe kama sahani na ile inayo nayo.

Fit together in your own culture like the dish and the one who has it.


kupendana katika misheni ya uhuru kama pete na kidole.

Love each other in mission of liberty as ring and finger. 


Shika pamoja katika misheni ya uhuru kama pete na kidole.

Hold together in mission of liberty like the ring and the finger. 


Ikiwa utaachana na rafiki yako katika kupigania uboreshaji wa watu wako mwenyewe unaalika upotezaji mkubwa kwako mwenyewe.

If you desert your friend in the fight for the betterment of your own people you invite the greatest loss upon yourself.


Kuishi kwa umoja pamoja katika misheni ya uhuru kama maji ambayo huchukua sura ya kikombe.

Live as one together in mission of liberty like the water that takes the shape of the cup.


The wonderful observance of Kwanzaa takes place from the 26th of so-called December to the 1st of so-called January. It is seven-day period of Afrikan celebration and spiritual-cultural enrichment. Based upon the harvesting traditions of the Afrikan world this celebration of first fruits has at its core the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles) together with an beautiful array of deeply meaningful symbols established elevate the Afrikan world community to its fullest flourishing.
