Kwanzaa – Proverbs of Self-Determination

Celebration of First Fruits

The wonderful wisdom filled utterances that emerge from throughout the Afrikan world are a result of the marvellous qualities of genius that have been gifted by the Creator Supreme. From the development of the first, most magnificent and longest-lived civilisations of the world delivered in all their splendour by the Afrikan, came profound and long-lasting utterances wisdom. Throughout the world Afrikans still retain the utterances of their wisdom tradition through proverbs. Whether on the great Afrikan continent itself or throughout the diaspora, the substance of age-old Afrikan wisdom is illuminated through proverbs. In celebrating the wonderful observance of Kwanzaa the glory of Afrikan wisdom is part of the festivities. Here follows a select sample of seven traditional Afrikan proverbs adapted by this author in relation to the principle Self-Determination of the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles) - Kujichagulia. These proverbs are expressed from the beautiful language of Kiswahili with their loose approximate meaning detailed in the alien pseudo-language of English: 


Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)


Daima uwe kujichagulia katifa maendeleo ya maisha ya Waafrika.

Be always self-determined in advancement of Afrikan living.


Ndege wa kundi la manyoya pamoja na kuruka na mabawa yao wenyewe.

Birds of a feather flock together and fly with their own wings.


Kujiamini na kuaminiana kunatokana na kujichagulia.

Confidence and trust comes from self-determination.


Waafrika ambao wanaishi kujichagulia hawatashindwa.

Afrikans that live in self-determination will not fail.


Simba hailala ndani ya shimo la nyoka.

The lion does not sleep in a pit of snakes.


Nguvu haiwezi kununuliwa imeamua mwenyewe.

Power cannot be purchased it is determined by itself.


Wengine wote lazima wacha watu wakuu wa Kiafrika wapiti.

All others must let the great Afrikan people pass.


The wonderful observance of Kwanzaa takes place from the 26th of so-called December to the 1st of so-called January. It is seven-day period of Afrikan celebration and spiritual-cultural enrichment. Based upon the harvesting traditions of the Afrikan world this celebration of first fruits has at its core the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles) together with an beautiful array of deeply meaningful symbols established elevate the Afrikan world community to its fullest flourishing.
