Many recall his magnificent spirit. One such recollection comes from Omowale Malcolm X’s Intellectual Friends in Afrika Ruby M. and E.U. Essien-Udom:

“From the time Malcolm came to Nigeria until he left he generated an unbelievable excitement. For those of us who had known Malcolm in the United States it was a joy to experience once again that rare combination of oratorical brilliance and fearlessness coupled with naked honesty and a genuine humility that made Malcolm so compelling and disarming. The Afrikan staff and students at the University of Ibadan were notably impressed by the forcefulness and the obvious honesty of his account of the [Afrikan’s] conditions in America. In his speech at Trenchard Hall at the University of Ibadan, Malcolm stressed the necessity for the Afrikan nations to lend their help in bringing the [Afrikans in America] case before the United Nations. He argued that the [Afrikans in America] community should cooperate with the world’s Pan-Afrikanists; and that even if they remained in America physically, they should return to Afrika, philosophically and culturally and develop a working unity within the framework of Pan-Afrikanism. Following his speech at Trenchard Hall, [a]…students’ society had a reception for Malcolm in the Students Union Hall and made himn an honorary member of their society. The endowed him with a new name, Omowale, meaning .’the son who has come home’. This gesture symbolised the wholehearted acceptance of Malcolm as a person and leader which we clearly observed among the radical youths and intellectuals in Nigeria.”.
