Celebrating the Great Marcus Garvey and the Garvey Movement

The first and magnificent International Convention of the
Garvey Movement took place in August of 1920 (so-called). Such vehicles for bringing
Afrikan souls together is a powerful and age-old tradition for Afrikan souls kept
alive in a variety of forms in contemporary Afrika and throughout the diaspora.
According the standard mainstream UK reference material:
“Convention, a word of various meanings, but always conveying the sense of its Latin original (conventio , from convenire, to come together). Thus it may mean a meeting or assembly, an agreement between parties; a general agreement on which is based some custom, institution, rule of behaviour or taste…The is of some interest historically and politically. It is used of an assembly of the representatives of a nation, state or party, and is particularly contrasted with the formal meetings of a legislature…Later it had the meaning of an assembly summoned to frame a constitution, as distinct from a merely legislative assembly”.
Garvey new well the power of convention in substance. He was exceptionally well versed on the subject of Governance and the plight of Afrikan souls throughout the world. He was aware of the International Conference of Booker T. Washington and its progressive economic self-help from decades prior as well as a plethora of other Afrikan experiences that surely informed his work and vision.
Garvey’s International Convention was to formalise oneness in his pioneering movement for victorious ascension of the whole Afrikan world. It was a grand meeting of minds led by this supreme visionary that shaped planning and development with powerful substance. In addition, it showcased the outward expression of Afrikan excellence, discipline order and majesty. Even contemporary foreign writers have had to conclude:
“By all accounts, no spectacle before or since in Harlem matched the parade given in honour of the international gathering of UNIA delegates. The UNIA Afrikan legions led the way in lockstep in their dark uniforms, followed by the Black Cross Nurses dressed all in white. Then the UNIA band preceded delegates with banners from twenty-five countries and numerous states as the processions made its way down Lennox Avenue. Enthusiastic cheers rang out as thousands of appreciative onlookers enjoyed the spectacle, the uniforms, the music, and the motorcade of 500 automobiles. News of the parade and the discussions and speeches of the convention appeared throughout the [Afrikan] press. People far and wide read accounts of the stirring display of [Afrikan] unity and pride. As much as any event in Garvey’s career, this day catapulted his movement into the wider public eye”.
Garvey opened the Convention with extensive spiritual engagement and throughout the month the order of activities for Afrikan ascension were brought to the fore. Afrikan souls in the now can surely engage an organ such as the Universal Royal Afrikan Nation and put ‘their best foot forward’ in genuine steps for whole ascension rooted in spiritual and cultural fabric. The grand reclamation of order amongst Afrikan souls is surely an imperative for righteous order to be restored in the world.
